Do you want to learn what to expect after graduate school? Don’t miss our 11th Annual Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) and Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) sponsored Ph.D. Panel on Friday, March 9th, 2018 from 2:00 to 4:30pm. Our event will start at 2pm in GMCS 301!
A number of STEM Ph.D. recipients, many who are SDSU alumni, will visit our campus to answer undergraduates’ questions about what it takes to make it through graduate school. This year we welcome Ph.Ds. from various backgrounds and disciplines (including biology, chemistry, engineering, math, psychology and physics); some are currently working in academia and industry, while others have procured a post-doctoral position, among other career trajectories. Every year, the event begins with an interdisciplinary panel, where all panelists sit together so students can ask general questions acrossdisciplines (e.g. what got you through the hard times in your doctoral program?)
After the one-hour group session has ended, the panelists are separated into discipline groups, which allows for more personal conversations. Students are able to ask discipline-specific questions ranging from what their career options might be after obtaining a Ph.D., to how to balance family and school while in graduate school or job hunting. We encourage students to come in prepared with questions! Don’t forget – these professionals were undergraduates only a few years ago and were sitting just where you are now! They have valuable information that you can learn from to help you succeed in your future academic and professional plans.
In the past, the majority of students have reported they “agreed” or “strongly agreed” to becoming more familiar with post-graduate career paths after attending one of our annual panels. If you are interested in hearing more about this year’s Post Ph.D. panel, please get in contact with Brittnie Bloom (IMSD) or Thelma Chavez (MARC), so you won’t miss this opportunity!

The IMSD and MARC programs are dedicated to preparing undergraduate STEM and behavioral science students for direct-entry into PhD. programs upon graduating with a bachelor’s degree from SDSU. Both the IMSD and MARC programs will be so happy to see many of you attend this year’s event and learn what life in a doctoral program is really like, what the job hunt is like after your program, and how to prepare for and successfully transition into life after becoming a Ph.D.
Both programs will continue to host seminars and networking opportunities such as this. If you are interested in obtaining more information or applying to these programs, you can visit the IMSD Program at http://sci.sdsu.edu/imsd/ and the MARC Program at https://marc.sdsu.edu/
