With great excitement, four of our current MARC scholars have been accepted to conduct research this summer across different institution in the United States (from California to New York!).
Anita and Lorelay, both Environmental Engineering majors, will be conducting research at the ReNUWIt’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program at the University of California Berkeley, This program engages undergraduate students in ReNUWIt faculty’s research labs, under the mentorship of ReNUWIt post-docs and graduate students. Participants learn laboratory/field techniques, are immersed in ReNUWIt’s collaborative and interdisciplinary culture, and conduct meaningful research in state-of-the-art facilities. REU participants also interact directly with ReNUWIt faculty and peers, receive professional development training, and experience ReNUWIt’s systems-level approach to addressing the nation’s water issues. Additional program requirements include meetings, oral presentations, a short written report, and summary slides and/or posters.
Nicole, an Applied Mathematics major will be attending a 10-week Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at the Center for Neural Science in New York (NYU). This program is designed to foster entry into a neuroscience research-centered career. During this program students actively participate in research projects in the laboratories of New York University science faculty. They work either directly with faculty or with graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Each student conducts a research project under the direction of his or her mentor. The students are involved in all phases of the research process from experimental design to data analysis and communication of results. At the end of the program, the students each give a presentation of their own work at a summer research conference. The primary goal of this program is to extend the Center’s robust neuroscience research opportunities to non-NYU students and to diversify the scientific workforce in the field of Neuroscience. The First week of SURP will include a “bootcamp” to accelerate the learning of lab skills specific to neural science.
Sara, a Biochemistry major, will participate in a 10-week Biological SIGNALS Research Program at the University if Wisconsin – Madison. Students in this program get an invaluable glimpse of what graduate-level study and research careers might entail, while being surrounded by a supportive community of peers and stimulated by extra activities that help add meaning, encourage critical thinking, and allow you to explore and prepare for your post-graduate future. SIGNALS is designed to be accessible to rising juniors and seniors who might not otherwise have this kind of undergraduate opportunity. In addition, a stipend is provided to each student, and housing and travel costs are covered. Underrepresented minority, low-income, and first-generation college students are strongly encouraged to apply, as are students from smaller institutions without broad research facilities.
Summer is always a great time for undergraduates get more research experience under their belt! Many universities, like the ones listed above, offer a number of research opportunities to students, with many of them offering stipends, travel awards and networking opportunities.
